BU Field House To Get More Commercial Flooring
October 28, 2009
The field house, also known as the new sports complex, built on the SUNY Binghamton Campus will be getting commercial flooring installed this week by the Binghamton Floor Specialists.
The northwest corner stairwell will be getting rubber tiles and stair treads installed. Johnsonite, a leading manufacturer of commercial flooring is supplying the new flooring for the project. Tim Porupski of the Endwell Rug Co. is the commercial salesman who contracted the project for the University.
The rubber treads and tiles will be installed on the steps and landings to insure safety for the well traveled area. This will complete the stairwells in the complex and adds the final touch aesthetically as well.
Chris Decker and his brother and partner Dave of the Binghamton Floor Specialists will be the technicians performing the job. The job is expected to take a few days and will be completed for the up coming basketball season.
Complete Home Renovation
October 28, 2009
Recently I have been helping a friend with an extensive remodel on his house. He is literally replacing everything but the walls and foundation. From the ceiling to the floors, we have gutted the entire house.
In order to save money, he decided to do all of the work himself. Although purchasing quality materials, he is looking to save money here as well. He chose bamboo for his flooring because it gives a hardwood appearance while costing a fraction of the price.
The Bewares of DIY Flooring
October 27, 2009
When I think of do it yourself, the initial thought that comes to mind is saving money. When budget constraints leave little room for extras, cutting costs become necessary. Certainly one of the best ways to cut costs is to do it yourself.
One of the best ways to save on flooring costs is to cut out the professional. Cutting out the professional is OK, but beware, you are also cutting out their knowledge and experience.
With that being said, a little research goes a long way. When using discount laminate flooring for instance, floor preparation can virtually be eliminated compared to a vinyl floor tile.
Pay close attention to the installation procedures once you make your selection. Beware of the attitude that says,” I can figure this out myself.” Missing an important step is the difference between expensive and saving.
When purchasing a floor for a DIY installation, beware of buying too cheap as well. This can cause an installation frustration. Flooring that isn’t made well is difficult even for the professional. There is nothing more frustrating than getting part way into an installation and having to pay a professional to finish the job.
In short, by studying your options, taking the time to learn how, and making your purchases wisely, you can achieve the results that you want for a price that you can afford. I say go for it!
Holiday Flooring Cheer
October 22, 2009
The holidays are almost here. You have cleaned the house and are beginning preparation for the holidays. Although things seem ready, something isn’t quite right.
In the northeast, it is time to move inside for the winter months. That means you will be spending more time inside.
You need something different, something to cheer you up for the time you are going to spend indoors. Let me make a suggestion.
Whatever your budget might be, change the way your flooring looks. Try a new modern area rug for the living room. Go bold with a new hardwood floor. Spend a lot of time in the kitchen? A new floor is a great way to remodel without tearing out the entire kitchen.
Go ahead… Cheer yourself up throughout the up and coming season and give your flooring a fresh new look!

Steep Step Downfall
October 21, 2009
Kind of an odd title for a post don’t ya think. That might be true, but that’s the point. In this post I want to draw your attention to the flight of stairs in your home that you might soon be carpeting.
If you have an unusually steep or narrow staircase, it may seem like a good idea to use a thick pad and carpet just in case someone were to fall, but the truth be told, using thick carpet and pad could actually cause a fall.
Using thicker carpeting and/or pad can cause a narrow step to become even narrower and can also create a false nosing that gives too much underfoot when traveling up or down, causing you to fall.
To avoid this potentially dangerous situation, switch to a commercial type carpet and pad such as felt or a thin rubber.
Using a commercial carpet without a pad is also common when performing a carpet installation on steps.
There are different ways to solve a steep step downfall. Recognizing this potentially dangerous situation is the first step. Solving it is all down hill from there!
Apartment Owners and VCT Flooring
October 20, 2009
VCT flooring or vinyl composition tile, is quite often used by landlords in their rental properties. This type of flooring is frequently used in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and entrance ways because of its cost, ease of installation and durability.
The type of vct referred to here is the true 1/8 ” commercial tile you would see in shopping centers, schools, and churches.
It can be categorized as diy flooring due to the ease of the installation and the few tools needed to accomplish the job. If it is installed and maintained correctly it will last for years without replacement making it an economical choice for apartment house owners.
The downfall to vinyl tile flooring is that if it isn’t installed or maintained properly, the tiles will curl and break, water will get underneath and they will lift, leaving holes in your wallet.
A little education and some determination will alleviate that situation though, and you will enjoy years of service from this investment.

Rubber Commercial Flooring
October 18, 2009
The Mannington corporation has recently launched their new line of rubber flooring. As the marketplace becomes more competitive, it is an advantage for the premium manufacturers of commercial flooring to continually add or update their product lines to enjoy their share of the profits in the industry.
Mannington’s new Premium Rubber Flooring line offers floor tiles, wall base, stair treads, and finishing accessories to compete with other manufacturers such as Roppe.
Over 70 colors have been added and out of those 70, 25 of them have been closely coordinated to their popular line of VCT flooring.
Rubber flooring also comes in sheets and is often used in very high traffic areas. The Binghamton Floor Specialists, a premium installation company located in Binghamton NY, has installed hundreds of yards of rubber flooring in elevators, corridors, and office spaces.
Colleges, such as SUNY Binghamton, often use rubber stair treads throughout the campus to accomodate the large volume of foot traffic found there.
Rubber flooring certainly has it’s place in the commercial flooring arena, but it can also be used in the residential marketplace as well. Tough is what comes to mind when I think of rubber products and if tough is what you need then rubber is the answer.
Hardwood Floors Made Out of Vinyl?
October 17, 2009
Nothing short of stunning really. Vinyl plank flooring is being made to simulate the realistic look of a true hardwood floor. The question would be, why? The answer, quite simply, would be functionality.
Vinyl plank flooring has many advantages over hardwood. The first one that comes to mind, for me anyway, would be its durability.
A quality vinyl plank ’s surface is tough. Scratching and denting are always a concern with hardwood, but vinyl plank’s resistance to it exceeds that of hardwood flooring hands down.
Another great quality would be its resistance to water. It can be used in areas where hardwood is a questionable application. Mud rooms and bathrooms are always a concern, as are basements.
Vinyl plank flooring is often used in a commercial setting. The picture that you see above is a dining room at a retirement center that was installed by our company.
If you look real close you can tell that it is not really a hardwood floor or can you?
