When selecting carpeting for your home it may seem like a monumental task ahead of you when it comes to choosing the right carpet for your needs. Carpets come in a vast array of colors and styles, textures, and fibers and there are many different qualities of carpets to choose from.

The two most popular types of carpeting today are loop pile and cut pile. Loop pile has individual strands of yarn pulled through the carpet backing twice, creating a loop. Cut pile has the loop cut at the top, leaving tufts of yarn that stand straight up. Cut pile carpets come in a variety of styles such as shag, textured, saxony, frieze, or plush. Loop pile carpets would be a berber, cable or sisal. Loop pile carpets are a good choice for high traffic areas.

There will be the decision on the type of carpet fiber you choose. One of the factors here is cost. While there is nothing quite as luxurious as having wool carpeting in your home most cannot afford wool. If you are able to afford wool carpeting you will find that although it cost more at the time of installation, your wool carpet will prove itself to be far superior to other types of carpeting. No man made carpet fiber can come close to the durability, rich look or feel of wool. Your wool carpet can last upwards of thirty years. Some say the drawback of wool is that you will get tired of it before you wear it out. Styles change rather quickly and what was popular 30 years ago might not be popular today. So, if you choose wool, pick a carpet that can accept the changes that will be made to the room around it in later years.

If cost is a factor, then you will need to know what other fibers are used for making carpet.

Acrylic carpeting is very similar to wool (wool is considered the best carpeting available) and is sometimes called man-made wool. It resists moisture, fading, mildew, staining and dries quickly, but is not recommended for high traffic areas in the home. Acrylic carpeting was popular at one time but is a dying fiber type for carpeting due to the number one complaint of it wearing out too quickly. You can still find acrylic carpeting and with its stronger characteristics can be used in the bathroom area of your home.

Nylon carpeting is popular due to it’s durability. It resists mildew, staining and soiling. Nylon carpet is recommended for all traffic areas. It is one of the most expensive of the synthetic fibers but cheaper than wool.

Olefin is a very low cost easy care material that is often used in indoor/outdoor carpeting. Olefin is colorfast and strong and easy to clean. One drawback to olefin is that crushes easily. A loop construction is not so easily crushed and is popular to the indoor outdoor carpets. Another drawback to Olefin is that it “burns” quite easily as well. Sliding furniture across it too quickly can leave a frazzled trail behind. Basically Olefin is sometimes referred to as plastic carpet. The all familiar grass carpeting is a great example of this type.

Polyester is luxurious and durable however is not as good in high traffic areas in the home as nylon is, although, yarn construction in certain polyesters are becoming more and more competitive to the nylons. Polyesters are exceptional to taking dye and therefore are very vibrant in color. This type of fiber cleans very well and is stain and fade resistant. Polyesters are easy on the wallet and can be replaced more often in certain situations. ( Like puppy training! )

Make sure you ask to see the manufacturers performance rating for each carpet.

The next consideration would be color and/or pattern of carpeting. Light carpeting colors create a spacious effect, making a room seem larger. Light color carpets of course show soil much more easily than dark. However, most stain and soil treatments put on carpeting today do help to prevent this problem.

Dark or dull carpet colors will absorb light giving the room what some call a “cozy” feeling. Rugs with larger patterns will make a space seem smaller, smaller patterns seemingly larger.

Your color choice could be based on the paint color used on your walls. It is suggested that if you do this, the color of the carpet be darker than the color on the walls.

Also, when choosing your carpet remember that the carpet installed on your floor will appear different in color and tone than the small sample you see in the store. Ask to take carpet samples home so that you can see how they actually appear in daylight and at night.

Follow These Stain-Removing Tips!

Area rugs can get super dirty. And, some stains just never seem to want to come out. But most stains will come out if you follow some important instructions. Remember that it is always important to test cleaning agents on fabric before spraying an entire stain area. Here are some tips on how to get stains out your kitchen area rugs fast and efficiently:

1 Scrub the stain from the outside towards the center.

2 Don’t scrub a carpet. The friction can ruin the carpet’s tufts. Instead, remove the stain by blotting. The less brushing the better.

3 Use a clean spray bottle to apply cleaning agents to the material. Do not pour liquids directly on the stain.

4 Don’t mix too many chemicals on the stain. Mixing chemicals can create harmful fumes. If this does occur don’t breathe in, or wear a mouth-and-nose mask.

5 Bleach is never an option in stain removal. Remember once you apply bleach there’s nothing you can do to remove it!

Most stains can be removed with a mild cleaning agent and water if they are organically based.

Grease can be removed with a mild degreaser, gum can be removed by freezing it with an ice cube and carefully scraping it off, citrus based cleaners are great for removing something sticky, and lastly you can use a petroleum based product such as lighter fluid to remove sticky substances or tar/asphalt stains. Remember to test a small area first!

One more tip, never use acetone based products such as nail polish removers!

When my wife and I moved into a new home a few months ago, we were generally thrilled with the investment. As you might expect, there were a few small improvements to be made, but the place is far from being a fixer-upper. There was really only one issue that we couldn’t get past – one problem that had to be remedied immediately. Something had to be done about the atrocious tile work in the kitchen.

At first we thought about retiling the space, but that would have cost too much. So we experimented with a few modern area rugs, which effectively obscured the offending tile and actually made the overall design quite palatable. Once we save up enough money, we might just redo the floor, but for the time being the rugs will have to do.
